George Washington and the Battle of Trenton

It’s December 1776. A young American nation finds itself in a war for Independence from Britain, the most powerful country in the world. America is losing.

With the British snapping at his heels, America’s General, George Washington has retreated across New Jersey, and into Pennsylvania; his force in threadbare uniforms, many without shoes.

The American commander is desperate. In a war for the life of a nation, Washington leads a group of rag-tag, untrained, divergent men from each corner and crevice of the new country. The morale has never been lower, and to make things worse, after recent losses at White Plains in October and Forts Washington and Lee in November the new year is now approaching and the probability of his men re-enlisting, and more men enlisting is fading. Washington … and America need a miracle.

This video describes the miracle and the victory.

The Battle of Assunpink Creek

aka: The Second Battle of Trenton

By January 1, 1777 Cornwallis and 8,000 British and Hessian troops had converged on Princeton where, Cornwallis was convinced by British General James Grant, a key tactical advisor to General Howe, and by Carl Von Donop, commander of the British garrisons in Trenton, Bulington and Bordentown along the Delaware, to march to Trenton to retake it.

Knowing their plans Washington determined to meet them. On December 29 Washington had once again moved his army back across the Delaware and set up camp just south and within sight of Trenton along the Assunpink Creek.

This video explains why this encampment of Washington’s turned into a trap; but once again Washington was saved by a miracle, and by his and his soldier’s creativity, faith, and extraordinary courage.

Again using courage, faith, and ingenuity George Washington and his group of rag-tag patriots audaciously attack and out move the British in what has been described as “one of the greatest flanking maneuvers in the history of warfare.”

This video explains the American’s predicament, describes, and illustrates their audacious plan, their incredible conquest, and how this victory changed the course of the war and our nation.
