“The first time I remember being totally conscious that God was really listening to me and communicating with me came long after I’d become a serious Christian. Up until then I’d prayed only on big stuff, hoping in blind faith that Christ would help me.

As it happened, I was sick. I was terribly congested, I was sick at my stomach, running a fever, and because I’d had very little sleep the past several nights, I was dog tired. The problem was I had to be at a family funeral.

I was in the shower, and the hot water running over my head and skin felt good; so good that I couldn’t make myself get out of the shower. I hacked around under the spray and its’ steam, and several times I thought I was going to faint. I remember more than once saying out loud, “Okay. I’m out a’ here in two minutes” but it didn’t happen, and if I didn’t get out of the shower, I was going to miss the funeral.

I don’t know what made me say out loud, “God, I can’t get out of this shower. I cannot do it. Please get me out of the shower so I can get dressed.”
